Ruby Diamond Necklace Set White Gold

One composition across two pieces, which is a harder thing to balance than a single object.

1,221 rubies, sorted and matched before a single one was set. The diamonds are graded against the rubies for tone first. Stones that read correctly on their own can still fight when they sit together. The diamonds are white throughout, which sets the boundary the colour is read against.

That is 1,518 individual settings. A single hand carries the whole run, because two setters will always close a grain slightly differently and at this density the eye catches it. At 162.35 grams the piece has to be built hollow where it will not be seen, or it could not be worn for long.

The design was resolved before the first stone was ordered, so the settings follow the drawing rather than the drawing accommodating the stones.
