The bird is shaped in the round rather than in relief, so it reads from the side as well as the front. The bail is set so the piece faces forward rather than turning, which is a matter of millimetres. The diamonds run along the form, 178 of them, spaced so the metal still shows.

The stones are set the jadau way: gold softened over heat and worked up around each one, with no claw and no solder showing. The order matters, because once a stone is bedded the metal beside it cannot be reheated. Two stones in one piece means sorting both for colour first, so the rubies do not fight the diamonds. 22KT gold is soft to work and unforgiving to finish.
