The mesh is woven from drawn wire, which means it drapes instead of holding a fixed curve. The sections are graduated toward the centre, which is what keeps the piece sitting level. The surface is close-set: 240 pearls with almost no metal showing between them.
The lattice is pierced from sheet gold with a saw blade finer than a hair, cut line by line. A slip cannot be filled, only started again. 240 stones, every one seated and tightened by hand. 22KT gold is soft to work and unforgiving to finish.
