The mesh is woven from drawn wire, which means it drapes instead of holding a fixed curve. The set holds together because the earring takes one element of the necklace rather than shrinking the whole thing. The surface is close-set: 288 pearls with almost no metal showing between them.
The lattice is pierced from sheet gold with a saw blade finer than a hair, cut line by line. A slip cannot be filled, only started again. 288 stones, every one seated and tightened by hand. 22KT gold is soft to work and unforgiving to finish.
