1,272 diamonds in one piece, each selected rather than ordered to a specification. The rubies are graded against the diamonds for tone first. Stones that read correctly on their own can still fight when they sit together.

1,614 settings, each cut and closed by hand. Work at that count is measured in weeks at the bench rather than days, and it is given to one setter so the tension stays even across the piece.

The bird is modelled in the round rather than in relief, so it holds from the side as well as the front. The design was resolved before the first stone was ordered, so the settings follow the drawing rather than the drawing accommodating the stones.
