278 diamonds, sorted and matched before a single one was set. Sapphires carry the colour, and the two are matched to one another before anything is set, which takes far longer than matching for size alone.

278 stones, seated one at a time. The spacing is what takes the hours, not the setting itself. At 109.54 grams the piece has to be built hollow where it will not be seen, or it could not be worn for long.

The design was resolved before the first stone was ordered, so the settings follow the drawing rather than the drawing accommodating the stones.
