Top and drop are hinged separately. That joint is what gives the movement its second beat. Only 18 diamonds, so each one has to sit exactly where the design puts it.

The stones are set the jadau way: gold softened over heat and worked up around each one, with no claw and no solder showing. The order matters, because once a stone is bedded the metal beside it cannot be reheated. 18KT gold holds the settings rigid where 22KT would move.
